French Classes – Winter 2026 (online & on-site)

Online registration for our Winter 2026 session of French classes is open.

  • All courses run for nine weeks. In-person classes take place from January 12 to March 12, and online classes from January 19 to March 19.
    Each course meets once a week for a two-hour session, though start times may vary. Enrollment is limited to eight students per course, and a class will open once at least three students have registered.
  • All online courses are delivered virtually through Zoom.
  • All in-person courses are delivered at our office, on 4901 Springarden Dr, Baltimore, MD 21209
  • If a whole course is cancelled by the AFB, your registration fee will be fully refunded.
  • if a class is cancelled by the AFB, it will be rescheduled and will take place during the session under way.
  • Cancellation of class registration after the session started is subject to the Policies of the Alliance Française de Baltimore. Please review them in advance.
  • We do not reschedule a class you missed.

Instructions

Instructions to Register for a Class or Workshop

  • To register in a class, other than Beginner 1, take a placement test and schedule a brief chat with us to sign-up for the appropriate class, or ask for information at info@afbaltimore.org.
  • Add your class to the cart and proceed to checkout.
  • PARTICIPANTS MUST BE A MEMBER of the Alliance Française de Baltimore to take classes. Please go to the Membership page to purchase a membership. If you are already a member, please login to your account.
  • For our general French group classes, a textbook and a workbook are required. Please order the books listed below and have them shipped before the start date of the class, if you do not have them yet. You can use the bookshop of your choice (amazon, MEP Education, ebay, etc):

Complete Beginner User A1-1 ONLINE

No prerequisite

This class is designed for complete beginners.  The emphasis of French 101 is on very basic conversational skills. You will be able to introduce yourself and others, talk about leisure activities, learn the French alphabet, count from 0 to 100.

Prerequisite: A1-1 or equivalent

Designed for students who have completed 101 or those who have taken French before but believe they have forgotten everything.  The focus of this class emphasizes basic conversational skills. You will be able to ask for and state your place of residence, express your tastes, introduce your family, talk about your family.

You will be able to talk about family, describe and characterizing a person or people, talk about our tastes, talk about ourselves (our profession, our passions, our dreams), talk about our activities, explain a health problem

Grammar skills : possessive adjectives (2) singular and plural, masculine, feminine, and plural forms of adjectives, present tense of -er verbs (summary), verb ‘faire’ + du / de la / de l’ / des, stressed pronouns, ‘Avoir mal à’ + body parts (Cosmopolite 1 – dossier 3).

Prerequisite A1-4 or equivalent

You will be able to talk about past events, talk about recent experiences or plans, understand biographical information, describe a person physically, talk about past and current events, give advice.

Grammar skills : passé composé (1), recent past and near future, verb ‘dire’ in the present, time markers (1), passé composé (2), Être + adjective, avoir + noun + adjective, the adjective ‘même’, Mais (but), imperative (2) (Cosmopolite 1 – dossier 5).

Talk about one’s background, express one’s intention to do something, talk about one’s likes and preferences, make a suggestion, accept or refuse an outing.

Grammar Skills: Past tense (passé composé): formation, use, regular and irregular past participles, negative sentences: ne…rien / personne / jamais / plus, the placement of negation; time markers: il y a, pendant, depuis.

You will be able to respond to a professional email, express disagreement, express dissatisfaction in a waiting line, talk about ways of getting to know people, write the questions for an interview.

You will learn to make reproaches and hypotheses, understand legal articles, express doubt, participate in a debate, make a proposal, understand informal/familiar register

Grammar skills: hypothesis (3): si + pluperfect + past conditional, the past conditional to express regret or reproach, elisions in sentences in the familiar register, double object pronouns, indefinite adjectives and pronouns, the subjunctive (3) to express doubt (Inspire 3 : dossier 8)
